Volunteer with OPR
OPR runs on volunteers. We take people on part-time for up to six months, in Mogadishu, in the Federal Member States, and remotely.
What volunteers do
Research — tracking cases, reading court records, building the database of detention sites and incidents. Monitoring the press — Somali and international, for arrests, deaths in custody, and court decisions. Translation — Somali to English and back, for reports, testimony and correspondence. Legal support — for lawyers and law students, assisting the free legal aid work. Fundraising and partnerships — writing proposals and keeping donors informed. Human rights education — helping deliver training for prison staff and communities. Your own expertise — medicine, data, design, security, anything OPR's work touches.
What to expect
A defined placement with a named contact at OPR, agreed hours, and real work that appears in what OPR publishes. Volunteers are unpaid. For fieldwork in Somalia we discuss security with you before anything starts, and no one is sent anywhere they judge unsafe.
